Dams and levees failing. The most notable example of this in recent history would be the disastrous levee breaks during 2005’s Hurricane Katrina. Levees and dams fail when cracks occur or excess pressure overtakes the dam’s ability to contain the surge of water behind it.

It’s a well-known fact that 2020 was a disastrous year for myriad reasons. But with all that it entailed, you might not have even had a chance to take in the fact that it was a record-setting year for weather disasters as well.

In fact, of all the years in history for which we have data, 2020 brought us the highest number of disasters.

A weather disaster is defined as an event that causes at a billion dollars in damages, and 2020 had 22 of them, shattering the previous record of 16.

And of course there were many other storms that didn’t reach that high dollar mark, but did plenty enough damage to keep the National Weather Service busy—so busy in fact that they ran out of English names for storms and had to make use of the Greek alphabet for only the second time in history.

Not Just Hurricanes

Hurricanes are probably the first thought as far as destructive storms go, but they’re not doing all the damage. In fact, the most expensive disasters of 2020 in the contiguous United States were thunderstorms and tornadoes. 

Fourteen of 2020’s billion-dollar disasters were thunderstorms, which happen with relatively equal frequency year-round and in locations across the country.

Take one example of the kind of destruction a thunderstorm can do: In August 2020, a seemingly normal line of thunderstorms in eastern Nebraska contorted into a violent derecho (essentially a tornado which unleashes straight-line winds instead of rotating), affecting over 10 million acres of corn fields. That was half of Nebraska’s entire crop, and over 11% of the corn crop of the entire United States.

Locally, we saw our own damage throughout the year, as both a round of tornadoes on Easter and remnants of Hurricanes Sally and Delta made their presence known in north Georgia.

Not Just 2020

One would like to imagine 2020 was an outlier, but in fact it was the 10th straight year of at least eight billion-dollar disasters. 2018 and 2019 took a combined $136 billion in damages, and 2017 reached a record total of over $300 billion.

• Food - Enough to last 3-7 days. Food needs to be non-perishable or canned food. You will also want to include a non-electric can opener and paper plates and plastic utensils.
• Clothing - Remember it may be warm, however, you may be working and cleaning and may prefer pants or long sleeves to protect your skin. You will also need sturdy, closed-toe, non-slip shoes if available.
• First aid kit including antiseptics or sanitizers and bandages, over the counter and prescription medications.
• Toiletries including toilet paper and hygiene items. Hand sanitizers are also good to have on hand.
• Extra flashlights and batteries. Oil lanterns also provide a good source of light, if available.
• Battery operated radio with extra batteries so you can listen to NOAA Weather service announcements.
• Bedding including sheets, blankets and pillows.

Protect Your Cobb County Family From Tornado Damage

• It is important to know the difference between a storm watch and storm warning. For example a tornado watch means favorable conditions are present to develop a tornado, but there is not an imminent threat. While a tornado warning means an imminent threat to life and property are present because a tornado has been detected.
• If you are at home or in a building you should move to a pre-designated shelter on the lowest floor (like a basement), or small interior room if a tornado is imminent. A small interior room, closet, bathroom or hallway, at ground level will work if there are no lower levels to the structure. Stay away from windows and put as many walls as possible between you and the exterior of the home or building.
• When possible, be familiar with the area and track storms, weather events and other disasters using apps on your phone, local TV, radio, or other reliable source for up-to-date news on current weather events. It’s a good idea to regularly check weather forecasts for threats and advisories especially if you will be outside or in a new area.
• DO NOT try and outrun a tornado in a vehicle. Get out of the vehicle and seek shelter immediately. If you are caught outside or in a vehicle and no safe structure is available, lie flat while covering your head in a nearby ditch or depression. Be aware of possible flooding and flying/falling debris. 
• You should go to the lowest floor of the closest sturdy building or storm shelter if you are in a mobile home. Mobile homes are typically not a very safe place to be during a tornado or other severe storm.
• The American Red Cross has created a Tornado Safety Checklist that can help you make a plan of action for threatening weather. If you don’t have an action plan in place before a major weather event happens you might be caught off guard and unprepared. Be sure to create a tornado safety plan so that you are prepared in the event of a major storm.

Spring Cleaning & Maintenance Checklist

Exterior of Home

Foundations - A good time to inspect the foundation of your home is while you're checking out the exterior walls. Look for similar issues like cracks or chipping masonry. If you find cracks in the foundation is probably best left to the professionals to seal and fix a cracked foundation.

Exterior Walls - Visually inspect your home’s exterior walls paying special attention to trouble areas like gutter downspouts and under eaves. Whether your exterior walls are made of brick, stucco or wood siding, water stains typically indicate that your gutters are not containing roof runoff. With wood siding, be mindful of bugs and animals like carpenter ants, woodpeckers and other nesting or burrowing animals that can damage your home exterior walls. If you have wood siding, check for openings, damaged areas or knots that have popped out. These types of damage make it easy for bugs and animals to damage your home.

Windows - Inspect windows for leaks and gaps along the window seal and pains of glass. If you're comfortable with minor DIY projects replace worn out, cracked or otherwise damaged weather stripping. Weather stripping helps prevent moisture from intruding into your home, and also prevents cold air from escaping due to displacement by hot air on warm days. An indicator that your double or triple-glazed window’s weather seal has been compromised or damaged, is condensation forming on the inside of the glass, especially during winter months.

Roof - Visually inspect your roof from the ground looking for missing or shifted shingles or fasteners that have come loose. Binoculars can help get a better view of any pushed up nails and cracked or damaged shingles. 

Chimney - With masonry chimneys be on the lookout for vegetational growth on masonry work or chipping and/or flaking of mortar, brick and/or stone. White calcium-like deposits on masonry joints indicate water absorption and means the joint might not be repelling water any longer.

Interior of Home

General Cleaning - Springtime is the opportune time to do some general cleaning around the house. Pay special attention to areas that typically do not see regular cleaning like dusting or vacuuming upholstered furniture, window seals, chair rails, and on top of ceiling fans and cabinets. The goal is to remove any dust, mites or other allergens so that your home is a healthier and cleaner space. Kitchen cabinets and walls that have minor oil buildup or grease residue, can oftentimes be cleaned using water and mild detergent. Also pay special attention to areas of the home that fluctuate in humidity and temperature like bathrooms. Look for signs of mold growth. Like on the exterior of the home check masonry work for damage like broken tiles or missing grout.

Leaks - Inspect plumbing connections under sinks for leaks and check drains and pipes for clogs and leaks. In the laundry room make sure that the washing machine hoses are not leaking, bulging, cracked or showing other signs of damage. Other areas that are notorious for leaks also involve appliances like water heaters and dishwashers. Make sure to check hoses and seals and be on the lookout for wetness under or around these appliances.

Basements - Two major things to look for in the basement are bugs/animals and moisture. High humidity and inadequate air movement can create the perfect conditions for mold to develop. Be on the lookout for signs of animals and insects that may have invaded your basement. Examine any exposed building materials for signs of moisture or mold growth. If you spot new crack(s) in the foundation, it’s probably advisable to call a structural engineer to determine if it could cause major issues or pose safety hazards.

Air Conditioning - Springtime maintenance for air conditioning units can vary greatly but in general there are some things you can do to help ensure your air conditioner runs great all spring and summer long (*always follow manufacture guidelines concerning any maintenance or cleaning procedures for your air conditioner). Change filters, check for leaks or loose hose connections, and make sure that your condensation lines and drain pads drain freely. Dust or gently vacuum dust from the unit and connections. For safety reasons, if there is an issue with the air conditioning unit and you don’t feel comfortable or qualified to handle, it’s highly advisable to call a professional.

Attics - Visually inspect the attic for signs that insects or animals have made your attic there home or feeding ground. Carefully inspect building materials like studs, insulation and trusses for mold growth, a flashlight will probably come in handy so that you can do a thorough search.

What To Do and What Not To Do After Storm Damage

What to do after a home flood? Mopping and blotting are good ways to remove excess standing water and saturated materials. Wood furniture can be wiped down to remove excess water, be sure to remove tabletop items like lamps and pictures, so the surface can be wiped down thoroughly. Aluminum foil or wood blocks can be placed between furniture legs and wet carpeting, and wet upholstery and cushions should be removed and propped up to allow them to air dry. Your air conditioner can be turned up to the maximum to help circulate air and help dry your property during the summer or warmer months. Painting, sculptures, and other artwork should be removed and stored in a safe, dry place. Colored rugs should be removed from wet carpeting to prevent leaching and staining. Any loose items on the floor should be gathered and stored in a safe dry place as well.

What not to do after a house flood? Do not use your household vacuum to suck up water, unless it is specifically rated to handle wet vacuuming. Electrocution and damage can result from using a household vacuum to remove water from carpets, upholstery or other saturated surfaces. TV and other household appliances are also electrocution hazards and should not be turned on. When safe, unplug or remove the power source of electronic devices that have been exposed to moisture. Wet ceilings pose both electrical and fall hazards. Do not turn on ceiling fans or lighting fixtures in rooms that have ceiling water damage and stay out of rooms with sagging ceilings. Do not leave colored items like books and magazines in contact with wet carpet, hardwoods, or other flooring, as they may stain the surface they are sitting on. One late August evening a homeowner in Kennesaw was heading home from a long day at the office. The rain was pouring down, lightning was lighting up the sky and the wind had picked up. Once inside the comforts of her home, dry from the raging storm outside, the homeowner went upstairs and couldn't believe what she found! That very tree she had put off having removed, had fallen in the storm, knocking through her roof and into her home, creating an unwanted skylight in the master bedroom and bathroom. Tree limbs and debris were everywhere and rain was rushing into her home, as the storm continued.

SERVPRO arrived on-site equipped with everything needed to complete the job in a timely, professional and efficient manner. Getting this Kennesaw home back to preloss condition in no time. After the roof was tarped and the site was secure our technicians began the restoration and cleanup process. First removing all of the debris and then using SERVPRO’s cutting edge portable water extractor to remove all of the standing water. The hardwood floors and baseboards in the master bedroom and bathroom were saturated with water. The drywall in both rooms were affected as well. 

Once all of the water was extracted our highly trained team of IICRC certified technicians began the drying and demolition process. First, our contents and moving professionals stepped in and carefully packed up, documented and processed all of the personal items affected in the rooms. Items such as books, photo albums, nightstands and a dresser were carefully packed and transported to our 10,000 square foot climate controlled, video surveilled warehouse to be cleaned and safely stored during the restoration process. 

The baseboards were removed and chalk-lines were made on the drywall for precise demolition cuts, removing the bottom few inches of drywall in the affected area. Our technicians then treated any exposed wall studs with SERVPRO’s proprietary cleaning products and antimicrobial treatments to prevent the growth of future mold. 

Now what about the beautiful hardwood floors?  At SERVPRO of East Cobb we use state-of-the-art equipment including the innovative Dri-Eaz Mat Drying System, one of the most effective and efficient pieces of floor drying equipment available. Along with the Dri-Eaz Mats for the hardwood floors, dehumidifiers and air movers were strategically placed to facilitate the drying process. Over the course of the next few days our technicians were monitoring and documenting the drying process. In the end, we were able to dry out and save the homeowners hardwood floors and when the drying process was complete the reconstruction portion of the restoration began. The roof was fully repaired, the drywall was mended, resurfaced and painted, and in no time, we were moving all of the homeowners belongings back into her home.

Hurricane Dorian's Destructive Path

Hurricane Dorian's destructive path and timeline.

Hurricane Dorian was a devastating natural disaster that claimed an estimated 50 lives, displaced thousands of people, and left tens of thousands homeless. The true scope of Dorian’s wrath is only now coming into focus as rescue and relief efforts are well underway. Efforts by the The Grand Bahama Port Authority and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) are leading the charge along with many other countries like the UK, Jamaica, and the European Union. Much humanitarian aid and work must be done to relieve the dire situation in the Caribbean.

Dorian hit Abaco Island in the Bahamas on September 1st as a category 5 hurricane with winds in excess of 180 mph. The next day it made landfall on the island of The Grand Bahamas, with powerful winds and the eye of the hurricane dumping between 6 to 14 inches of rain accumulation from it’s inner core. Along with Dorian’s high winds the progression of the storm began to slow, making it seemingly hover over the Caribbean, prolonging the battering the islands endured. 

In the US, Dorian did not make landfall until September 6th in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. From September 3rd through September 7th, Dorian pounded the East Coast from Florida to North Carolina, ranging in strength from category 4 to category 1 as it progressed up the coast. It even spun off almost two dozen tornadoes in the North and South Carolina leaving nearly half a million people without power temporarily. In Georgia, Gov. Brian Kemp declared a state of emergency for 21 counties and several roads and highways were closed due to the storm. Not to diminish the damage done to the East Coast but it was largely spared in comparison to the damage done in the Bahamas.

A weather radio is designed to alert you to dangerous weather situations, such as an approaching tornado. It allows you to be warned ahead of approaching storms providing you time to seek shelter. Although lightning can strike anytime, the chances for lighting increases in the summer months. Stay safe with these basic tips.

• Have a lighting safety plan, and cancel/postpone outdoor activities if thunderstorms are expected.
• If you do get caught outside, avoid high ground, open spaces, and all metal objects including electric wires, fences, etc. Seek shelter in a substantial building or a fully enclosed metal vehicle.
• If you are indoors, stay away from doors and windows. Do not use the telephone. Consider unplugging computers, power tools, and TV sets. Lighting may strike exterior electric/phone lines, inducing shocks to inside equipment.

When your home or business suffers a water damage, understanding what type of water you are dealing with is critical to ensuring proper cleanup.

There are three types of water. Clean water is water from a broken pipe, or other water source; rainwater is also considered clean. The term gray water is used to classify slightly contaminated water. Clean water becomes gray water when it is left untreated allowing bacteria and other contaminants to begin growing, making the water hazardous. Black water is highly contaminated and filled with fungi, bacteria, chemicals and more. Black water is typically caused by sewage damage, flooding or any type of natural disaster. Black water should always be handled by trained professionals.

Consider taking the following precautions to help minimize damage or prevent further damage while waiting for help to arrive.

Damage from Clean Water

• Shut off the wate source if possible or contact a qualified professional to do so.

• Turn off circuit breakers for wet areas of the building if access to the power distribuion panel is safe from potential electrical shock. Do not enter rooms with standing water, as electrical shock hazards may exist.

• Update Contact Information. Having accurate records for family, friends and neighbors will help you stay in contact and possibly help those in need. Make sure updated contact information is posted in visible places throughout your house and workplace.

• Plan your Purchases. You can save money by thinking ahead. Don't buy preparedness items just before the storm when they're expensive and supplies will be in high demand. Buy items at the end of the season when you can get good deals.
• Make Sure it Keeps. Store water in safe, containers. you Don't need to buy expensive bottled water, just make sure your water containers are disinfected and airtight
• Trade a Night Out. Trade one night out to fund your 72-hour kit. Taking a family of four to the movies can cost upwards of $80. Just one night staying in could fund your ready kit.

The regular occurrence of natural disasters demonstrates the importance of being prepared for any emergency. While each situation is unique, your organization can be better prepared if you plan carefully, put emergency procedures in place, and practice for all kinds of emergencies. The following are basic measures business owners and managers can take to begin preparing. A commitment to being planning today will help support your employees, customers, the community, local economy, and even the country. It also protects your business investment and gives your company a better chance for survival.

• Develop a Business Continuity Plan - Your organization's risk needs will vary depending on the specific industry, size, scope and location. Begin by reviewing your business process flow chart, if one exists, to identify operations critical to survival and recovery. Carefully assess your internal and external functions to determine which staff, materials, procedures and equipment are absolutely necessary to keep the business operating. You should also establish procedures for succession of management.

• Review Insurance Coverage - Inadequate insurance coverage can lead to major financial loss if your business is damaged, destroyed or simply interrupted for a period of time. Insurance policies vary; check with your agent or provider about things such as physical losses, flood coverage and business interruption. Understand what your policy does and does not cover

• Prepare Your Emergency Plan - Your employees and co-workers are your business' most valuable asset. Communication is central before, during and after a disaster. Include emergency information is newsletters, on your company intranet, in periodic employee e-mails and/or other communication tools.

• Practice the Emergency Plan - Some disasters will require employees to leave the workplace quickly. The ability to evacuate workers, customers and visitors effectively can save lives. If you business operates out of more than one location, establish evacuation procedures for each individual building. If your company is in a high-rise building, an industrial park, or even a small strip mall, it is important to coordinate and practice with other tenants or businesses to avoid confusion and potential gridlock.

• Secure Your Facility and Equipment - Install fire extinguishers, smoke alarms and detectors in appropriate places. Secure all entry and exit points and plan for mail safety. Plan what you will do if your building, plant or store is not usable. Secure valuable equipment.

• Improve Cyber Security - Protecting your data and information systems may require specialized expertise, but even the smallest business can be better prepared. Use anti-virus software and keep it up-to-date. Don't open e-mails from unknown sources. Use hard-to-guess passwords. Protect your computer from intruders by using firewalls. Back up your computer data and download security protection updates known as patches regularly.

Through its "Ready Campaign", the Federal Emergency Management Agency educates and empowers Americans to take some simple steps to prepare for and respond to potential emergencies/natural disasters. The "Ready Campaign" asks individuals to do three key things: get an emergency supply kit, make a family emergency plan, and be informed about the different types of emergencies that could occur and their appropriate responses.

All Americans should have some basic supplies on hand in order to survive for at least three days if an emergency occurs. Following is a listing of some basic items that every emergency supply kit should include. However, it is important that individuals review this list and consider where they live and the unique needs of their family in order to create an emergency supply kit that will meet these needs. Individuals should also consider having at least two emergency supply kits, one full kit at home and smaller portable kits in their workplace, vehicle or other places they spend time.

Recommended Items to Include in a Basic Emergency Supply Kit:

• Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation
• Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food
• Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both
• Flashlight and extra batteries
• First aid kit
• Whistle to signal for help
• Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheets and duct tape to secure shelter-in-place
• Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities
• Can opener for food (if kit contains canned food)
• Local maps

Additional Items to Consider adding to an Emergency Supply Kit:

• Prescription medications and glasses
• Infant formula ad diapers
• Pet food and extra water for your pet
• Important family documents such as copies of insurance policies, identification and bank account records in a waterproof, portable container
• Cash or traveler's checks and change
• Emergency reference material such as a first aid book or information from www.ready.gov
• Sleeping bag or warm blanket for each person. Consider additional bedding if you live in a cold-weather climate.
• Household chlorine bleach and medicine dropper- When diluted nine parts water to one part bleach, bleach can be used as a disinfectant. or in an emergency, you can use it to treat water by using 16 drops of reular household liquid bleach per gallon of water. Do not use scented, color safe or bleaches with added cleaners.
• Fire Extinguisher
• Matches in a waterproof container
• Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items
• Mess kits, paper cups, plates and plastic utensils, paper towels
• Paper and pencil
• Books, games, puzzles or other activities for children
