A Checklist for Severe Weather Preparedness
If you are hoping to be more prepared for severe weather, this checklist is a great place to start. By making sure you have a plan in place and everything you need, you can have the peace of mind of knowing you are as prepared as possible for a significant weather event.
Here are some items to check off your storm preparedness list:
- Get a NOAA weather radio (either battery-powered or hand-powered) so you can stay updated on weather conditions even if cell phones fail.
- Designate an area in your home to be a safe area (preferably a basement or room without windows).
- Gather supplies for a severe weather emergency kit, including flashlights, batteries, non-perishable foods and sealed water bottles.
- Make sure you have first-aid items handy and have received basic first-aid training.
- Remove any questionable branches that could damage your home during high winds.
- Secure patio furniture and other potential projectiles ahead of every storm.
- Know where local shelters are in relation to your home.
- Educate yourself on the difference between thunderstorm watches and warnings.
- Unplug appliances, TVs and electronics ahead of severe weather.
- Avoid showering or using plumbing if thunder is audible in your area.
- Keep a copy of important documents such as passports, home insurance policies and checks with your emergency kit.
