The upcoming winter months are sure to be a blur of traditions and parties, gatherings and holiday events. It brings a promise of cold weather, but it almost surely also brings a promise of warm, cozy moments with the ones you love.
But if you want to maintain that warm, cozy feeling, there are few things you’re going to need to take care of first. Whether it’s protecting your home from harsh winter weather or preparing for potentially dangerous ice and snow, there are some things you’ll want to be aware of.
Protect Your Family
An important part of family safety in any season is communication. That’s why it’s crucial for you to develop and practice an emergency action plan that will prepare your family for the event of winter storms or emergencies.
And it’s time to winterize the family care, too—check the battery, the tires, the fluids and your car’s electrical systems. Even if we don’t see significant snow and ice this year, you’re sure to encounter some click road conditions from winter storms at some point. And as part of your emergency kit, pack some warm clothes and a pair of sturdy pair of shoes, should you end up stranded in your car at any point.
Protect Your Home
Frozen pipes aren’t a constant threat during Georgia winters, but when temperatures take a sudden nose dive, they become a very real possibility. When a hard freeze hits town, let your pipes release some pressure by letting showers and sinks drip. Check the health of your home’s heat system as well. It’s better to get it tuned up now than for it to struggle or fail in the dead of winter.
If you have a wood fireplace or furnace, make sure to clean it thoroughly to avoid the fire hazard of accumulated soot, see to it that it’s well-ventilated, and always build and put out winter fires safely. And if you feel random cool breezes, or your home seems to lose heat, check your attic for inadequate insulation, and your windows for broken or damaged seals.
Protect Your Pets
Your pets likely aren’t built for the cold of winter. Bring them in and make them comfortable somewhere. If you do have outdoor animals or livestock, make sure they are properly sheltered, and that they have a constant source of water replenished regularly if temperatures are at or below freezing.
