The Dangers of Severe Weather | SERVPRO of East Cobb

For Georgia residents, severe weather is not a foreign concept. Our hot and humid summers can often give rise to sudden thunderstorms, bringing along high winds, hail, heavy rains and tornado threats. No matter how quickly these events pop up or how quickly they are over, they can still cause serious damage to those caught in their path.
There are many reasons why severe weather is dangerous that goes beyond the conditions of the storm. Due to the sudden and unpredictable nature of severe weather events such as thunderstorms, in addition to the temptation to not take events seriously when they occur often, the threat of severe weather goes far beyond flash flooding and lightning strikes.
Why Severe Weather Is So Dangerous
It can come about suddenly
Sometimes, severe weather fronts will move into an area with plenty of warning, but this is not always the case. The heat and humidity of Georgia create conditions that are ideal for severe thunderstorms to pop up suddenly, which can catch people off-guard and away from a safe sheltering area where they can seek refuge.
It can be unpredictable
The reason behind having a watch and a warning system is due in part to how unpredictable severe weather fronts can be. During a watch, it means that conditions are favorable for an event (such as a tornado or flash flood) to occur. Oftentimes, these events will suddenly begin, starting before weather officials have time to catch them on radar or process on-the-ground reports, giving them an unpredictable nature that is a force to be reckoned with.
It can be downplayed
As we have already mentioned, severe weather is nothing new for our area, but that does not make it any less dangerous or any less likely to cause serious damages. While it may be easy to reason that the last storm did not cause damage, so the next storm likely will not either, this is a dangerous line of thinking. Every storm is different, and every severe weather front brings with it the threat of injury, property damage and even fatalities.
