Winter Wonderland Season | SERVPRO of East Cobb

Winter officially starts on Dec. 21 this year, but according to where you look, winter likely looks incredibly different. In north Georgia, winter tends to creep in slowly as our mild temperatures lower gradually, while other areas move into winter fast as snow and ice seem to never end.
Regardless of where you are, winter comes with its own set of severe weather that can leave your property damaged and your family out in the rain (or snow…or fog…or, well, you understand).
When you understand all the potential hazards the season could carry, you can get your home ready so that your family stays safe.
Winter Around the Nation
Wet and mild, cold and full of snow are two ways that the upcoming winter has been described around the United States, creating a picture of a nation in two halves.
The Midwest area and areas around the East Coast can expect a winter that brings low temperatures and heavy amounts of snow that will last all season long. Out on the West Coast, temperatures will likely stay mild and more rain than snow will fall throughout the cold months.
While predictions can certainly vary over the months and according to the regions, the more prepared you are the more you can keep your property from incurring damages.
Winter Around East Cobb
Georgia weather is always a mixed bag, and winter is no exception. We can see anything from freezing temps to days in the 70s, sometimes within the same week.
December and January are our coldest months, and we average about two inches of snow for the entire winter season. While this winter is anticipated to be colder than average, we will still likely see more rain than snow.
Even without heavy precipitation this winter, when your home is prepared for anything you can snuggle under that heated blanket a little more peacefully.
Get Prepared
To be able to focus on that blanket and not the fear of weather related damage to your home, there are a few things you should do ahead of the season. The first thing is to get familiar with the kinds of winter storms that could threaten North Georgia.
Next, be sure you have at least two ways you can get weather alerts, and make sure one of them doesn’t need any kind of external power to work in the event a storm takes out your electricity.
A supply kit for emergencies is another way to prepare your home and your family for winter. Keep your kit in a safe location that can be accessed from an interior room, and take a look at its contents periodically to keep it seasonally appropriate. Pack one for the car, too, to stay safe in unexpected situations.
Even if we don’t see extremely low temperatures this season, weatherproofing your window frames and doors can protect your home from damaging moisture and help with your heat bill. Put a cover on your outdoor faucets, too, before our colder months hit to avoid frozen pipes in the morning.
Your roof protects your home all year, so give it a little extra attention before the weather gets really cold and wet to repair anything that has aged or broken. Cut tree limbs that have grown close to your home, and think about adding extra insulation to your attic or crawl space to help your home weather any storm.
