Pack a Disaster Kit Before a Calamity Strikes | SERVPRO of East Cobb

8/16/2022 (Permalink)

Packed bag of needs in a disaster SERVPRO of East Cobb can repair the damage after a disaster leaves your house in ruins.

When it comes to natural disasters, you can never be too prepared. That is why putting together a disaster kit now, before the disaster strikes, can save your life if a disaster strikes East Cobb without warning.

Our East Cobb community has experienced a plethora of natural disasters, some of which left homeowners without power or supplies for days. Since these occurrences are unpredictable, being prepared for a crisis when floodwaters begin to flow or tornadoes are forecast can be extremely helpful if you and your family are left without the essentials.

Here’s what you can pack in your kit so you’ll have everything you need to endure any disaster:

Food and water. Disasters could leave you without essentials like food and water for days. When packing food in your kit, it’s important to use nonperishable items to ensure they won’t expire when you need to eat them. Store around one gallon of water per member of your family per day for three days to ensure everyone has access to clean drinking water.

Hand-crank radio. When a disaster strikes, you might not have access to your smartphone, so you’ll need to receive alerts the old-fashioned way to stay informed about the unfolding catastrophe! To stay informed about ongoing conditions, invest in a battery-powered or a hand-crank weather radio.

Flashlights. Power outages are common during a natural disaster and can mean much more than simply a loss of electricity. A flashlight can help you navigate your home in the dark since you won’t be able to charge your smartphone for some time. Be sure to pack multiple flashlights along with extra batteries.

First-aid kit. Even though it’s upsetting to think about it, disasters can result in injuries, and you might be forced to take care of them on your own. A first-aid kit filled with essentials like bandages, pain relievers, cold packs and other basic supplies can be helpful if anyone gets hurt during or after an emergency.

Additionally, be sure to include any over-the-counter medications or prescriptions that members of your household depend on for their health or well-being in your kit.

Being prepared for a disaster demands extra planning. A disaster kit is an ideal approach to make sure you and your family will withstand any crisis. While these are only a few items you should consider including in your kit, the American Red Cross has created a quiz so you can check if your kit is ready for any emergency!

Our SERVPRO team can repair the damage after a disaster leaves your house in ruins. We have experience responding to local emergencies, and we know what it takes to restore your home to its preloss condition. Contact us today

Stay Safe This Summer By Preventing Fires | SERVPRO of East Cobb

Marshmallows by the campfire If your home or business is affected by flames this summer, get in touch with our team at SERVPRO of East Cobb right away.

When summertime rolls around, there are so many festivities to be enjoyed, like firing up the grill or relaxing by the campfire with your family. Many of these activities increase the risk of fires, so learning how to protect yourself from flames is essential.

Fires like this can spread quickly. When flames from campfires and barbecues come into contact with outside materials such as trees, grass and leaves, they spread much faster.

The first step in preventing these fires is to be aware of the flames you are in charge of! Here are a few ways you can keep accidental flames from spreading while enjoying the summer sun:

Campfire Safety

If you’re planning on starting a campfire this summer, be careful not to spread any unintentional flames. Build your fire away from any structures, plants and trees.

Keeping your campfire small is the best way to be able to maintain flames.

Have a water source nearby for when you're ready to put out your campfire or if any accidental flames appear. Douse the flames in water and completely cover any remaining embers with dirt after extinguishing them.

Ensure there is nothing left smoldering by using the back of your hand to feel for any warmth.

Grill Safety

Grill fires are a common problem in the United States, costing homeowners an estimated $37 million in property damage each year. To keep flames from spreading, keep your grill outside at least 10 feet away from your home.

Never leave food cooking unattended and always keep a close eye so you can control flare-ups as they occur.

Keeping your grill clean can also help to prevent fires. Grease and food debris fall down and hit coals, causing fires. Regularly clean your grill by removing the drip pan, cleaning off any debris or grease and rinsing it off in warm water.

Air Conditioning Fires

As the summer heats up, you rely on your air conditioner to keep you cool, but if there are any defects, such as electrical malfunctions or faulty wiring, flames could ignite.

Summer is the most common season for air conditioning fires, with 2,300 residential fires occurring year-round.

To avoid AC fires, try to avoid overuse as much as you can and be sure to keep your unit clean of dust and debris. It wouldn’t hurt to schedule a routine maintenance checkup for your air conditioner to have any damage repaired before it causes problems!

If your home or business is affected by flames this summer, get in touch with our team at SERVPRO of East Cobb. We want to assist you in recovering any losses you may have suffered as a result of a fire.
